Our Songs – Baltinglass Hospital

Stephanie Behan

Our Songs was a participatory music project led by soprano Stephanie Behan with residents of Baltinglass Hospital. Through a series of music workshops, residents were invited to share their favourite songs and the memories, stories and experiences connected to them.

At the heart of the project was the idea that music can create connection, support memory and celebrate identity. Rather than simply performing for the residents, Stephanie worked collaboratively with them, listening to their musical choices and allowing their songs and stories to shape the project.

Working closely with hospital staff, Stephanie created an inclusive and flexible environment where residents could participate at their own pace. Familiar songs sparked memories and conversations, with residents singing along, clapping, sharing stories and responding to music that held personal meaning for them.

The project culminated in a special celebratory concert at Baltinglass Hospital, featuring songs chosen by the residents. Personalised programmes were created for the occasion, giving residents a lasting memento and a way to revisit the songs and memories after the project had ended.

The response from residents and staff was hugely positive. The project created moments of joy, recognition and connection, bringing residents, staff, visitors and family members together through shared musical experiences.

Some comments from the residents:
“I love hearing songs from my younger days as it made me remember my dancing days”
‘The songs bring back lovely memories.’
“Music relaxes me and lifts my spirit.”

Our Songs was supported through the first round of the Creative Places Baltinglass Creative Community Activation Fund.
